Constituent Materials, Microstructure and Inner Structure

Investigations on constituent materials with development of innovative materials and methods for protection and restoration.

Scientific investigations are employed to determine the nature of ancient materials, identify production techniques and usage, find information on provenance, dating, authenticity, as well as on attribution, as a support to historical- artistic studies.

The identification of constituent materials and the assessment of damage are the first steps for designing effective conservation strategies.

The use of non-destructive or micro-destructive techniques allows the full characterization of constituent materials, as well as the set-up of restoration materials and intervention techniques without further damage to the artifacts.

On the basis of the identification of materials and damage mechanisms, innovative materials and methods for structural strengthening, materials consolidation and surface protection are developed.

Micro- and non-destructive diagnostic methodologies and techniques for the characterisation of Cultural Heritage constituent materials, as well as of restoration materials and intervention techniques: investigation of inorganic/organic materials (characteristics and performance, manufacturing processes, age and provenance, etc.), assessment of the materials’ damage/decay state and degradation mechanisms.

Non-destructive methodologies and analytical techniques for the investigation of the structure and the internal constitution of artifacts: non-destructive analysis by digital radiographic imaging, CT and MRI investigations of internal sections of works of art on different scales; TD-NMR methods for microstructural study of porous materials.

Design and development of innovative materials and methods for structural strengthening, materials consolidation and surface protection: basic study and lab-based optimization, followed by comparison with commercially-available products and on-site testing.
